When a trail is constructed, people use the path for many purposes. The multiple uses are one reason why trails are so successful and appeal to so many people.

The Indiana Trails Study, which surveyed trail users on six different trails in Indiana, found that in all locations, over 70 percent of trail users reported that they were getting more exercise as a direct result of the trail.
